Trieste, the city of Umberto Saba and Italo Svevo, is a crossroads of cultures and religions due to its geographical ‘border’ position and to the historical vicissitudes that have made it a meeting place for many different peoples.

The marvellous Miramare Castle
overlooks the gulf of Trieste, just a few kilometres North of the city and was built at the behest of Maximilian of the Hapsburgs, Archduke of Austria and Emperor of Mexico. It was later the home of Duke Amedeo of Aosta. Also visit the Grotta Gigante (Giant Grotto) in the Carso area, the uplands behind Trieste. The exceptional proportions of the cave and its clever illumination highlight all that nature has created and make for an impressive show.
